Shoplifting 'remains a priority' for police in Stockport

Officers in Stockport and Greater Manchester are 'continuing to crack down on retail crime', Greater Manchester Police (GMP) has said.
It comes as the force announced that 893 shoplifting arrests were made across Greater Manchester throughout the first quarter of 2025.
These arrests resulted in more than 707 charges.
GMP's methods of tackling retail crime have included 'days of action' and closer relationships with retailers.
An example of a 'day of action' was GMP's deployment to Stockport town centre on 22 January 2025, as part of 'Operation Rimini'.
Days of action such as these see police officers deployed in force, in an effort to crack down on shoplifting, anti-social behaviour, drug use, and more.

Each GMP district - including Stockport - also has monthly meetings with a contact who shares best practice. These meetings are overseen by the force lead for retail crime, Supt Cara Charlesworth.
As a GMP spokesperson said: "Retail crime, shoplifting, and violence against workers remains a priority for GMP, and work will continue throughout this year, as our problem-solving teams carry on making a difference to communities across Greater Manchester."
Supt Cara Charlesworth added: "We completely understand the frustrations that businesses have when it comes to shoplifters, and I want to reassure them that we stand firmly alongside them. Whether you work in a large multinational supermarket or a local corner shop; we are there for you.
"I would urge any stores with any ongoing issues to get in touch with their local neighbourhood team, as they will be best-placed to help with your queries."
