Greater Manchester Police (GMP) have announced the authorisation of temporary Section 60 stop and search powers, in force until 8.15pm today (4 May).
These powers are enabled for the area between Heald Green and Handforth (see below for a map of the precise zoning).
GMP are also targeting an area around Burnage with a southerly boundary between Ladybarn Park and Cringle Playing Fields, which Stockport residents may be affected by.
These temporary measures give officers additional powers to stop and search people in these areas.
It comes in response to two incidents; one involving the discharge of firearms in Burnage on 30 April, and another concerning a series of arson attacks on 2 May.
In a press release, GMP stated: "These powers have been implemented temporarily in response to recent incidents.
"Police are treating these incidents as linked and targeted attacks and there is believed to be no threat to the wider community. […]
"GMP understand the use of a Section 60 can cause concern to residents, however, the use of these powers is only authorised when it is proportionate and necessary.
"Officers out and about will continue to do all they can to keep you safe and will be on hand to offer any reassurance.
"Extra uniformed and non-uniformed officers have been deployed to the areas to support the investigation team and the community."
