Stockport Council has set out a 'rapid plan' for St Thomas' CofE Primary School in Stockport town centre, in line with new guidance on reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (RAAC).
The school has been closed since yesterday (30 October) due to the presence of RAAC. The council has now announced that students will temporarily be relocated to Woodford Primary School, five miles away.
Woodford Primary opened last year as part of the Laurus Trust, and is currently only open for two year groups. Laurus Trust CEO Linda Magrath said: "We have the space to ensure that our current children can continue to learn in their own spaces with their own teachers, and St Thomas' can have the top floor of our building as their own."
St Thomas' students in years 1-6 will move to Woodford Primary for three weeks so that face-to-face teaching can continue.
Nursery and Reception children will continue to learn at St Thomas' in the one area of the school which does not have RAAC in the ceiling.
Cllr Wendy Meikle, cabinet member for children, families & education at Stockport Council, said: "Closing a school is never an easy decision, but the safety and wellbeing of our children always has to be a priority.
"We are fortunate that Woodford Primary, a free school that opened in September 2022, currently has space as the school has been growing over a period of seven years."
