Stockport's foodie scene could be in for a boost, following news that a series of £11,000 grants are being made available to support restaurants in the area.

The 'Backing International Small Restaurants' programme is an American Express initiative, with support from the International Downtown Association (IDA). A total of £220,000 is available, to be distributed across 20 restaurants in Greater London and Greater Manchester.

This is the first time that the grant will be available for Greater Manchester, so it represents a special opportunity to perhaps secure some funding for Stockport businesses.

To be eligible, businesses must have a brick-and-mortar shop front in the area.

And, as the IDA explains, the grant is aimed at "independent restaurants that demonstrate a positive impact on their community, and are owned by individuals from underrepresented and/or economically vulnerable groups".

Other cities where the scheme has been rolled out previously have included Sydney, Melbourne, Toronto, Montreal, Tokyo, Osaka, and Mexico City. Stockport is in illustrious international company, then. (Image - Unsplash / Nomadic Julien)

The grant is designed to be used for 'critical improvements'; this is quite a wide-ranging definition, and can include anything from refurbishments, through to website / digital redesign.

The IDA will work alongside local authorities and the Association of Town and City Management to decide where to distribute the funds.

See HERE for more details on how to apply.

Dan Edelman of American Express said: "We're delighted to once again back small independent restaurants and, this year, extend the grant programme to cover venues in Manchester.

"Our hope is that the grant funding offers a welcome boost to its recipients."

Cllr Mark Hunter, Leader of Stockport Council said: "This is a fantastic opportunity for Stockport hospitality businesses and we have some great cafes and restaurants who go above and beyond to support their local community.

"I would urge those who meet the criteria to apply. We have a diverse culinary scene in Stockport and this would be a huge boost to their business."

Mark Ross, chief executive of Totally Stockport, said: "It is great to see the American Express Grant Programme has returned for 2024.

"We hope that many of our town centre cafes and restaurant businesses will opt to apply for these grants and make use of these small but essential cash injections. If you need some support applying for these funds do get in touch with the Totally Stockport team and we will do what we can to help!"

The deadline is 31 May, at 5am. Apply HERE, or read more information beforehand on the relevant IDA webpage.
