A team from Greater Manchester Police (GMP) deployed to Stockport this January as part of a 'hotspot blitz', in a period which saw arrests, cash and weapons seizures, and even assaults on officers.

A dedicated team of officers was deployed to the borough to "tackle offenders and make a sizeable impact on reducing serious violence".

Policed worked in the town centre, Brinnington, Reddish, Edgeley, and Shaw Heath, using a mix of covert and high-visibility tactics.

Officers made 20 arrests in total, mostly for drug-related offences.

In one incident, police pulled over a vehicle which was driving erratically on St Mary's Way in a lawful stop and search.

According to GMP, two suspects from the vehicle then "began to fight with officers with one pushing an officer to the floor and making off on foot in possession of [a] bag of drugs.

"While officers gave chase the second suspect attacked further but was subdued and taken to the floor where he was arrested and placed in handcuffs."

The first suspect was eventually caught, and the bag of drugs was recovered.

Police added: "Both men were arrested on suspicion of possession with intent to supply Class A drugs, money laundering and assaulting emergency workers. It later transpired they were heavily linked to drug dealing from an organised crime gang."

Elsewhere, in another incident in Shaw Heath, police also recovered Class A drugs, cash, phones, and a debt list, after a series of house searches.

Officers also made five arrests and "disrupted a criminal network in the process".

All in all, the targeted operation saw:

  • 20 arrests
  • 17 positive stop and searches
  • 29 intelligence submissions
  • £5,000 cash seized
  • £20,000 street value worth of Class A & B drugs removed
  • Two knives recovered
  • Three weapon sweeps of parks and open areas linked to crime
  • Four arrest attempts of wanted offenders with one being for serious assault
