Plans to build 500 new homes at former Stockport Sainsbury's store
A massive transformation will take place at a former Sainsbury's store in Stockport where there are plans to build more than 500 new homes.
The empty supermarket site, on Warren Street in the town centre, has been chosen by Amstone Developments as the location for its new residential scheme, which will see new apartments built across three new blocks up to seven, 10 and 15 storeys in height.
Councillors approved the £100m proposal in November 2022, and since then the town hall and developer have been locked in "extensive negotiation" to iron out the details of the scheme.
A breakthrough has now been made with a legal agreement signed to push the plans forward.
The development will create 563 new homes and 119 car parking spots, as well as disabled spaces, electric vehicle charging points, and cycle spaces.
Stockport council said the new homes will sit "in the heart of [its] plans for Town Centre East" which has been earmarked for the next phase of the town's transformation.
This will see 8,000 homes built over the next 15 years as part of a £1bn investment being driven by Stockport Mayoral Development Corporation.
Regeneration work in the borough has delivered new homes as well as major infrastructure upgrades such as the town's transport interchange which opened last year.
Bosses at the town hall hope the regeneration work will make a strong case to have Stockport's call for a Metrolink station answered, after Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) said last year that it is putting together a business case for the expansion.
A Stockport council spokesperson said: "Town Centre East will deliver a diverse range of new neighbourhoods and homes with an emphasis on affordability and accessibility for people at all stages of life, tackling the long-term challenge of housing Stockport's growing population.
"The scale and complexity of the scheme, which include new residential buildings, commercial space, and public realm improvements, has required extensive negotiation to ensure that the scheme delivers an exemplar development delivering high standards and long-term benefits for the community."
