Sainsbury's has submitted plans to open a new store in Bredbury.

It would be based in in the former Homebase store on Stockport Road East.

The new shop would create an estimated 100 new jobs, and would generate around £3.5m per year for the local economy, the planning application says.

Sainsbury's estimates that the store would be open within 12 months of receiving the green light from Stockport Council's planning committee.

Plans were submitted in early September 2026, with a decision due on 30 October.

The supermarket chain argues that the new store will increase choice for residents in the area, and would bring an "unbeatable combination of quality fresh food, great value, and innovative products".

"If Sainsbury's cannot open their store, the Homebase will remain vacant, detracting from the area and attracting anti-social behaviour", the application argues.

"If the Sainsbury's comes forward it will result in the beneficial re-use of the retail unit, bring £5m of new investment to Bredbury and create new employment. It will also enhance the food shopping provision in the area."

In terms of space, the application says that the new Sainsbury's will take up a lower footprint than the Homebase store, as it won't have a garden mezzanine area.

And as for roads, the application argues that there would be no adverse impact on traffic in the area as a result of the new store.
