Plans have been submitted for a new food and drink venue in the heart of Stockport town centre.

It would be based at 16a Market Place, close to the St Petersgate Bridge, with a rooftop terrace on top of 13 Little Underbank (the Age UK building).

Plans suggest the building would be 'light touch', making use of an 'eyesore' structure at the top of the steps leading to Little Underbank.

The indoor section of the building would extend along the alleyway by Marketplace Studios, effectively on 'ground floor' level with Market Place.

The rooftop terrace, meanwhile, would sit above the Mustard co-working space, Dal Barista and Age UK (there are no changes proposed to any of these businesses in the plans).

This spot, planners say, 'capitalises on the site's unique topography', offering panoramic views of local landmarks and a birds-eye view of the Underbanks.

A canopy is proposed to cover part of the terrace, meaning it could be enjoyed in the rain, too.

Opening times would be during the day and evening, operating within 'standard town centre hours'.

Planners acknowledged the presence of apartments and residences nearby, although they say the bar is "unlikely to result in a significant adverse effect" on noise in the area.

Making the case for the plans, they said: "It will significantly enhance the vital connection between the Market Place, drawing people from Underbanks to Market Place and vice versa."

Neighbours and Stockport residents can give their feedback on the plans - the standard consultation expiry date is Monday 9 March, or Saturday 14 March for neighbours.
