Races, stunts, stalls, and more are in store for the 'Stockport Moves' event on 2 July, taking place at St Peter's Square in the town centre.

Plans for this 'flagship' Town of Culture event have recently been outlined by Stockport Council, featuring a whole host of activities aimed at 'celebrating the joy of moving'.

The Stockport Mile kicks off proceedings, where any participant can run, jog, or walk their way to a medal. This inter-generational race is also accessible and open to wheelchairs, adapted trikes and buggies, allowing everyone to feel what it's like to cross the finish line.

The Race the Town event will also take place. This one mile run is invitation-only for top athletes from across Greater Manchester, but is nonetheless a fantastic opportunity to watch top performers.

Meanwhile, those in the mood for different thrills can catch the heart-stopping, half-pipe stunt displays by trails bike champion Danny Butler and his team in the 'Extreme Mountain Bike Show'.

More cycling activities are available with the dedicated children's circuits from British Cycling, and various bikes to try out on traffic-free routes.

A plethora of other sports and fitness exercises will also be on offer throughout the day, including football, racquet sports and more.

According to Stockport Council: "This year's event has built on the success of previous events. It has transformed into an event that aims to make physical activity for everyone, with the opportunity to try something new—a full timetable of taster activities, including volleyball, boxing and inclusive tennis.

"Life Leisure and A.C.E will have fun games for all the family. On the gentler side, there will be yoga and chair-based activities."

Food and more activities such as face painting will also be available, with a huge variety of stalls set up for the day.

Councillor Frankie Singleton, the cabinet member for communities, culture and sport, said: "This event is about the people of Stockport, all ages and abilities coming together as a community and feeling part of something special and joyful.

"Moving has so many benefits, it's incredibly social and helps keep us happy and healthy. We want as many people as possible to join in the free race and fun on the day."

'Stockport Moves', then, will feature a street-party atmosphere, offering all kinds of fitness activities. It will be a fantastic place for inspiration, exercise, and spectacle.

Proceedings start from 10am on Sunday 2 July.
