Plans move forward for new Tesco Express in Mersey Square

Further plans have been submitted and approved in relation to a new Tesco Express shop in Mersey Square.
The supermarket chain has now submitted plans for the store's frontage at 16-22 Mersey Square in Stockport town centre. The plans only comprise signage - as yet, details of layout have not been revealed.
Planning consent was granted for the proposed signage.
The site in question was previously an Argos. Planning permission for a retail outlet has existed for this site since 2021.
A report from that time stated that there were sufficient car parks nearby to meet potential demand for an outlet, and that it would "have no detrimental impact upon the character and appearance of adjacent heritage assets".
The 2021 report adds: "The proposed change of use is compliant with the relevant planning policies and would ensure the long-term use of a currently vacant unit in a prominent location."
Tesco now looks closer to moving in, having also submitted a premises licence application earlier this year.
The premises licence includes the provision of refreshments and alcohol.
Tesco has said it will keep the local community updated with the plans.
At current, the closest Tesco in Stockport town centre is the site at Portwood Roundabout.
Tesco describes its Express stores as a place for 'essentials', for those who can't get all their shopping done in one go.
According to data company Scrapeshark, there are currently 2,876 Tesco stores in the UK.
