Plans to build hundreds of apartments in Stockport town centre, with a community hub and rooftop growing space, have been tabled.

Picture This Stockport, a development firm, has revealed a scheme to put 244 one, two and three-bedroom rental apartments on the former Ritz Cinema car park, off Fletcher Street.

The proposal is a joint venture with Progressive Living, designed by AEW Architects.

The 'rooftop growing space' included in the design could be used by residents and non-residents.

On the ground floor, there are plans for a 'neighbourhood hub' to hold events and hobby sessions for the wider community.

A planning application for the scheme is due to be submitted to Stockport council later this year.

If approved, Picture This will manage the building and resident experience.

Stockport council agreed to sell the former Ritz Cinema car park for residential development in 2018, and the land was later bought by Progressive Living.

A consultation about the plans has been launched.

This states: 'We want residents to feel a sense of belonging, whether you are aged eight or 80, therefore all our apartments have been designed to Lifetime Homes standard, and 10 percent will be wheelchair adaptable.

'We want to be a good neighbour, and bring something worthwhile to the existing Stockport town centre community.

'Local businesses, creatives and CICs [community interest companies] are all part of our long term approach to managing Picture This Stockport.

'We have a rooftop growing space for residents and non-residents to enjoy.

'We also have space for a neighbourhood hub on the ground floor which can be used by the wider community for events and hobby sessions.

'We are delivering a Passivhaus Low Energy scheme, not only because we are taking responsibility for our carbon consumption, but also to ensure Picture This residents have lower bills.'

If approved, the scheme would join a number of other developments taking place in Stockport town centre as the town undergoes a period of huge regeneration.

The council has pledged to deliver 4,000 new homes in the borough, alongside projects to improve transport links, such as the opening of Stockport's new interchange.
