Stockport's biggest volunteer event is set to make a comeback this year to celebrate the work of the local community.

After last year's event saw over 200 nominations, Stockport Rocks! is set to return for its third year this May.

It will see dozens of local volunteers and organisations recognised across eleven categories, including for 'Young Volunteer', 'Long Service Volunteer', and 'Unsung Hero' of the year.

With over 57,000 volunteers in Stockport, Stockport Rocks! hopes to celebrate members of our community who dedicate their free time in service of others.

The event will see an awards ceremony complete with a meal and gala event set in Edgeley Park, the home of Stockport County, and is jointly arranged by Stockport Volunteer Hub and Sector 3, a charity which supports the volunteer sector.

"Stockport is full of fantastic groups and organisations doing wonderful things for our community," said Sector 3's Clare Finch, "but it's our volunteers who give it all heart. They're the quiet heroes doing extraordinary things.

"So, we're bringing people together, lifting the spirits, and giving them a well-earned celebration to show just how much they mean to us!"

Last year's Volunteer of the Year, Bernard Kivel, was nominated after over two decades of work for the Heaton Norris Community Centre, which he  helped transform from a derelict building.

The community centre now runs several groups and activities a week, and works to support people across all age groups.

After his nomination, he has since been invited to the King's Annual Garden Party this summer.

Nominations for this year's event are now open until 16 March, and can be made via the Stockport Volunteer Hub Website
