Officials chew over McDonald's plans for new delivery area
By Ian Burke 5th Jun 2026
Planners have granted McDonald's permission to add a new delivery hatch to their Grand Central restaurant in Stockport town centre.
The development will see a 'McDelivery' area installed next to the main entrance off Station Road and reflects consumers ordering more takeaways from traditionally eat-in fast food outlets.
However, work cannot begin on the scheme until McDonald's submit new drawings to accommodate the expected increase in delivery drivers.
Stockport Council's planning case officer, Lily Khan, said in her report: "Details shall include how the car parking facilities will be marked out, to include for 3 'courier' bays -2 spaces for cars and 1 cluster area to accommodate 4-6 motorcycles.
"The car parking facilities shall thereafter be retained and shall remain available for use. The car parking facilities shall be illuminated at all times during the hours of darkness that the car park is in use, either permanently or using motion-controlled lighting."
The Wellington Road site will also see some minor internal alterations, including new tables and chairs, booths and stud walls.
McDonald's began trialling home deliveries in the summer of 2017 on UberEats before rolling out to the rest of the UK and other food apps, now accounting for at least 20% of their orders despite added delivery charges and other fees.
