New York's Flatiron building appears to be the inspiration behind a proposal for a new £6 million apartment block in Stockport town centre.
The plan for a six-storey building with 33 apartments and space for a shop on the ground floor have been submitted to the council.
The scheme, by Altrincham-based developer 21 Living, is located on the corner of Tiviot Dale and Bridge Street, close to Stockport's Merseyway shopping centre and historic Underbanks area.
Designed by Ollier Smurthwaite Architects, computer-generated images of the proposed development give a nod to the iconic Flatiron building in Manhattan.
"Demand for first-class apartments in Stockport is high, and this scheme will continue the regeneration drive that is gathering pace here," says Luke Powell, managing director at 21 Living. "Our focus is on delivering high-quality modern living that makes a positive impact on the local community."
Matt Ollier, director at Ollier Smurthwaite Architects, added that the concept "reintroduces the historic urban grain to this part of Stockport" and has taken inspiration from the Victorian façade of Tiviot Dale Station, a now demolished former railway station in the town.
21 Living is also planning to develop a further two sites in Stockport, with planning applications due to be lodged this month.
The combined value of the three proposed developments amounts to around £25 million, bosses said. Stockport has seen major regeneration projects taking place around the town over the past few years, with new apartment blocks being built and upgrades to transport infrastructure.
Plans are also under way to expand the Stockport Exchange scheme based around the town's railway station, as well as creating a new 'walkable neighbourhood' in the west of the town centre with up to 1,200 new homes and new green spaces.
