New traffic cameras are being installed by Stockport Council at two key locations in the borough.

The cameras will be based at Massie Street/High Street in Cheadle, and A6/New Moor Lane in Hazel Grove, in an effort to "improve safety and help congestion".

It means the council will be able to enforce traffic restrictions more easily by using Automatic Number Plate Recognition camera technology.

"These changes will help make resident journeys in the borough quicker by limiting unnecessary traffic holdups, and also safer by reducing illegal traffic movements", a council spokesperson said.

Although the cameras are being installed this September, they will not go live immediately as testing still needs to take place.

When enforcement does begin, there will be a six-month introductory period where, if a motorist does get caught breaking the rules, they will receive a warning notice rather than a fine. However, a subsequent contravention during that period could result in a fine.

Further cameras will be installed on Georges Road/A6 in Heaton Norris and on Bramhall Lane/A6 near the Blossoms at a later date.
