New town-centre beach aims to 'save summer' in Stockport
By Alasdair Perry 30th Jul 2026
Merseyway shopping centre has introduced a little piece of the seaside to its outdoor area.
Dubbed 'Merseybay', it's a free self-contained beach, replete with sand, beach huts, deckchairs, and buckets & spades.
The area is open for all to enjoy - especially children who can have fun playing in the pit and parents who can relax by the 'beach'-side.
There are even stalls offering seaside snacks and icy refreshments.
It's based outside Primark, and aims to offer families "the perfect place to relax, play and enjoy the school summer holidays without breaking the bank".
What's more, every Tuesday from 4 August, the beach will host some superhero-themed events.
The full itinerary is as follows:
- Tuesday 4 August - Spider Hero and Spider Ghoul visit, plus a free craft session to create a superhero-themed keyring
- Tuesday 11 August - Superhero Girl and Bat Hero swoop in for meet and greets, while youngsters design their own superhero kite.
- Tuesday 18 August - Green Giant and Rock Man arrive for photo opportunities, while young recruits enjoy a free stationery hunt around the shopping centre
- Tuesday 25 August - The Superhero Academy Party takes to the streets, featuring a host of superhero appearances, interactive entertainment and plenty of surprises.
The beach will be open during the Merseyway centre's opening hours.
Victoria Nichol, centre manager at Merseyway, said: "Merseybay brings thousands of families together during the school summer holidays and it's become a real tradition for so many people across Stockport and beyond.
"This year, we're inviting everyone to unleash their inner superhero with free activities every Tuesday. There's something for every family to enjoy and we can't wait to welcome everyone back for another action-packed summer".
Cllr Micheala Meikle, cabinet member for economy, regeneration and skills at Stockport Council, said: "Merseybay has become a much-loved part of summer in Stockport, giving families a free and affordable way to enjoy the holidays in the heart of the town centre.
"This year's superhero-themed beach is set to bring even more fun, helping to create lasting memories for local families while supporting our town centre businesses.
"Events like this play an important role in making Stockport a vibrant destination where people want to spend time, shop, eat and enjoy everything the town has to offer."
