New temporary bus depots to be built at Heaton Lane and Wood Street

New temporary bus depots are on the way for Stockport town centre.

Plans were approved in April this year for temporary depots at Heaton Lane (on the site of the former car park) and Wood Street (on the former Lundy site).

The existing bus depot at Daw Bank is being demolished to allow for 435 new homes to be built on the same site.

These new facilities are expected to be in use for around five years, until a permanent home is found for the Stockport bus depot.

Between the sites, the facilities will provide parking for 148 buses, bus washing facilities, office buildings, car parking for staff, and engineering facilities such as fuel tanks and pumps.

Demolition of the Heaton Lane car park to make way for the bus depot has already occurred.

However, demolition of the Lundy site was halted after bat roosts were discovered - since then, however, planning permission has been granted, provided the development follows Bat Conservation Trust principles.

Part of this involves providing a bat box on the new building.

The new homes which are being built on what is currently the Daw Bank site form part of Stockport 8 - a £250m regeneration project.

The Stockport 8 scheme was approved by council planners last year, and will create a new neighbourhood with 1,300 homes next to the town's iconic viaduct arches.

Alongside new homes, Stockport 8 will create new spaces for shops and businesses in the town centre.
