Stockport Council is this week considering plans for a new block of flats in Stockport town centre.

The plans comprise a six-storey apartment block in Tiviot Dale, with 29 new flats as well as space for shops and businesses on the ground floor.

If given the go ahead at the planning committee on 24 September, the scheme would be the latest in a number of developments across the town centre which have gone up in recent years.

Going forward, Stockport Council wants to build thousands of new homes as part of plans to regenerate the town.

The new block would see the current buildings at 2 and 4 Tiviot Dale on the site demolished. Most of the new flats will be one bedroom with only two two-bedroom apartments while shop units would open up on the ground floor.

At the moment, none of the flats are proposed to be classed as affordable. The developer 21 Living Ltd has argued this would make the scheme unviable.

At a recent area committee meeting, councillors debated the plans with frustrations highlighted around the lack of parking provision. A council report summarising the debate said: "This area of the town centre is grim and it is hoped that this development will be the catalyst to breathing much needed new life."

Councillors recommended the application be approved. Officers said the issue of affordable housing 'should be waived in this case in order to promote the delivery of the development' but there will be an agreement in place to clawback any excess profits that might be made which would be invested elsewhere in the borough.
