Progress is continuing on the new community and leisure hub in Marple, which has now been 'topped out'.

The new building, due to open in Autumn 2026, will comprise a modern library, a five-lane swimming pool, a 60-station fitness suite, a café, and a relocated Marple Clinic.

'Topping out' refers to the placement of the final part of the building's core structure.

It means that work can continue in earnest on the internal fit out.

New pictures (which can be seen in the carousel above) showcase the extent of the progress on the hub.

Cllr Mark Roberts, Leader of Stockport Council, described the topping out milestone as a 'proud moment'.

"It represents months of hard work and collaboration from teams across the project", he said.

"You can already see this building taking on the character and purpose the community asked for, which has echoes of what we did in Stockport town centre with Stockroom, which has been and continues to be a huge success.

"This is a space shaped by the community, for the community, right here in the heart of Marple and is part of our wider vision to secure investment for similar opportunities for all areas of our borough."

Cllr Micheala Meikle, cabinet member for economy, regeneration and skills at Stockport Council, said: "Families will soon be splashing in the pool, residents reading in the library, and neighbours meeting over coffee, all under one roof.

"This is a major investment in happier, healthier lives and a landmark example of the high-quality regeneration happening across our borough."

The new building will replace a number of outdated buildings in the area.

For one, it replaces the former swimming pool, which closed in 2018 for safety reasons.

It will also host a relocated library and clinic.
