Huge plans for a new neighbourhood next to Stockport's iconic railway arches look set to go ahead.

The £250m project, known as Stockport 8, will see 1,300 homes built across three plots of land to the west of Stockport Viaduct and transport interchange.

Councillors will decide the plans at Stockport's central area committee on July 31, with a recommendation to approve.

The work could start in 2026 and continue in phases until June 2034.

Plot one includes three detached buildings between nine and 11 stories in height, based on the Stagecoach bus depot which would be demolished.

Plots two and three are asking for outline planning permission, but the concept design could see buildings up to 11 and 16 stories in height.

The tallest tower would be up to 94m in height, higher than the 34m Viaduct that is a famous part of Stockport's skyline.

Currently, the land area is home to a mix of low-rise buildings on the intersection of King Street West and Daw Bank, including industrial and office use, as well as surface level car parking.

Designs involve creating 1,573 sqm of space for businesses and the community, with the project dubbed the 'the single largest residential regeneration scheme' in Stockport town centre west.

The aim of Stockport 8 is to create a 'well-connected walkable place' that blends new development with the town's history.

Stockport 8 is being led by English Cities Fund, a partnership between Muse, Legal and General, and Homes England, working alongside Stockport council and Stockport Mayoral Development Corporation.

Across the town centre, a £1bn investment has been made to turn it into a bustling hub where people want to live, work and hang out.

This includes big plans for the east of Stockport town centre, where a 280-acre site has been earmarked for the next step in the huge transformation.

In total, around 8,000 homes could be built across the town centre over the next 15 years.
