A new drive-thru coffee shop which serves food could open in Stockport next to a major road.

Stockport Council has received a planning application asking for permission to build the outlet in the Morrisons car park on Stockport Road West in Bredbury.

The application was submitted by service station operator Motor Fuel Group.

Stockport Road West is a major access point for cars going to Stockport town centre or Woodley, and is close to Bredbury interchange and the M60.

To the south of the Morrisons supermarket there are several housing estates. An existing McDonald's drive-thru is located to the north based on Whitefield Road.

A planning report claimed that 'opportunities exist for staff and customers to access the site by sustainable modes of transport' and that the outlet would 'not have an adverse impact on the safe operation of the local highway network.'

There is a bus stop outside the Morrisons supermarket with connections to Stockport town centre.

Bredbury railway station is based further up the road.

The planning report continued: 'The proposed drive-thru coffee shop will be constructed to a high standard and incorporates a cafe seating area, serving and back of house areas.

'With an outdoor seating area providing additional seating space. A wrap around drive-thru lane provides access for cars to be served from a serving hatch to the rear of the building.'

The plans have come forward as a way to 'rejuvenate under-used areas of the WM Morrisons existing car park' with a coffee shop which can 'operate independently of the superstore.'

A transport statement has been submitted with the plans.

This stated that surveys were done at two food-to-go sites used by Greggs to determine the potential impact on traffic for the proposed coffee shop on Stockport Road West.

The Greggs sites were found to have 'increased vehicle movements by approximately 6 per cent on weekdays and 7 per cent on weekends', according to the planning report.

The surveys were done during the weekday and a Saturday between the hours of 7am and 7pm relating to a shared site with a petrol filling station.

The report added: 'It has been demonstrated that the traffic generated is not severe as the majority of movements to and from the site are already present on the network and are being diverted or on shared trips already with the food store and other outlets.

'There would be minimal queueing at the drive-thru and the site can accommodate the facility adequately.'

Stockport council has set a target date of April 30 to make a decision on the plans.
