'End of an era' as Yu & Me shop prepares to close its doors
The much-loved local hardware shop Yu & Me is closing its doors on 5 January 2025.
The shop, which sits at 361 Buxton Road, has been described by Google reviewers as having 'everything you didn't know you needed'. Others described it as an 'Aladdin's cave' of DIY and homeware goods.
Following a recent planning application, the building will be demolished to make way for a new, redeveloped Co-op store.
In a post on social media, business owner Warner Yu said: "Sorry, but we will be closing down on 5 January 2025 as our lease has run out. [...]
"Wishing you all the best, and thank you for everything."
The business is hosting a 'great Yu & Me sale' until its closing date on 5 January.
Plans for the new Co-op development were approved in August 2024. The site will feature 13 parking spaces, plus cycle spaces and bollards.
It will replace the existing Co-op store, with a new Co-op which will be larger by 46 square metres. On top of this is the additional parking space.
A planning document reads: "To enable the construction of the proposed development the existing Co-op and the adjoining Yu & Me store will need to be demolished.
"The new Co-op will include enhanced customer facilities improving the shopping experience for both customers and staff."
One commenter said the closure of Yu & Me marked 'the end of an era'.
