A Stockport nurse has been recognised for his outstanding dementia care. 

Matthew Berrisford, a dedicated nurse and unit manager from Adswood Lodge care home in Stockport, won The Dementia Carer Award at the North West regional finals of the Great British Care Awards. 

Matthew was nominated by his colleagues, who celebrated his exceptional leadership, expertise, and commitment. 

And as well as being an inspiring nurse, Matthew has also written two books in dementia care. 

His illustrated guide, Visions in Dementia, has been used in other care homes to help professionals understand the experiences of people living with dementia, including perceptual and sensory changes. 

Judges praised Matthew for his 'proactive and progressive' approach to care. 

"Matthew has an impressive background, enabling him to transfer skills and knowledge effectively", they said. 

"His approach to complex dementia care is inspiring and should be showcased for us all to learn and develop dementia care that ensures that complex cases are understood before we give them an unnecessary label." 

Matthew himself said: ""I'm incredibly proud to receive this award, but even more proud of the team around me who bring our vision for dementia care to life every day. 

"Great dementia care is about working to understand the person – who they are, what matters to them, what a great day looks like for them – and then creating the right environment for them to thrive. To be recognised for something I'm so passionate about is truly humbling." 

Barry Swire, regional director at Exemplar Health Care - which manages Adswood Lodge - added: "Matthew represents the very best of our organisation and our sector. 

"He is an outstanding role model whose innovative approach and compassionate leadership have had a real and lasting impact on the people he supports, the colleagues he mentors, and the wider sector through his published works. 

"His commitment to person-centred, independence-focused, and empowering dementia care epitomises everything we stand for at Exemplar Health Care. This recognition is thoroughly deserved."
