Illicit drugs and cash seized in Brinnington shop
By Alasdair Perry 19th Mar 2026
Police have seized illicit tobacco and more than £40,000 in cash following a search of a shop in Brinnington.
It comes as part of 'Operation Vulcan', a period of intensified police activity and investigation in Brinnington launched by Greater Manchester Police (GMP).
The shop, on Penhurst Road, was subject to a police visit following intelligence gathered within the community.
On the same intelligence, two men – aged 28 and 39 – were arrested on suspicion of money laundering.
Searches of the business resulted in the discovery of illicit tobacco and approximately £35-40k in cash. The tobacco and cash was seized for further review.
During the work, a further man was detained on suspicion of immigration offences, with official from the Immigration team undertaking further enquiries.
GMP will carry out a thorough financial investigation soon.
The specialist Operation Vulcan police team has been on the ground since mid-February.
They have previous experience working in Derker, Piccadilly Gardens, and Cheetham Hill.
They have been carrying out "a sustained campaign of activity", ranging from arrests and early-morning search warrants through to community engagement days.
The team aims to tackle criminality head-on, while 'laying foundations' to keep the crime rate lower in the future.
Inspector Dan Cullum, from the Operation Vulcan team, said: "Illegal business practices can put many people at risk – from illicit and potentially harmful products to criminality behind the scenes – and it is right that we properly scrutinise where we suspect that something isn't right and proper.
"Operation Vulcan has been in the area for a month now and we are investigating all manner of criminality, from businesses to nuisance homes, to anti-social hotspots. I would urge anyone within the area to get in touch with us if they have any issues."
