Hundreds of homes planned on Stockport’s green belt in new ‘garden neighbourhood’

Hundreds of homes could be built as part of a new 'garden neighbourhood' on green belt land in Stockport.
Land south of Chester Road in Woodford is being eyed for the scheme by JAG Woodford Ltd and Russell LDP, whose partner company is Russell Homes.
Planning documents say it would be a 'logical extension' to Woodford, which is based near the boundary with Cheshire and close to the A555.
An application has been submitted to Stockport council for up to 395 new homes in a range of types and sizes, with half of these set to be at 'affordable' prices.
Space has also been set aside for 15 self build plots, as well as 72 extra care apartments and another 72 in a care home setting.

Plans for the land include a site to be used as a shop or for food and drinks, a medical centre, a nature park, and a day nursery.
The land is 'located within the Greater Manchester green belt' but the developer has argued it should be classed as 'grey belt' instead because of its 'low performing' qualities.
It added that any work on the land would 'amount to only relatively limited harm' to the green belt.
The application states: 'The vision is to create a new sustainable, high-quality neighbourhood which significantly improves the local housing offer in Woodford by delivering a range of house types to meet a variety of housing needs, including affordable dwellings, aspirational homes for young people and families, larger higher value homes, and homes for the elderly.'

Designs show two access points from Chester Road to create a 'main loop road' through the neighbourhood, and to allow for a new bus service.
Car parking is set to be part of the scheme, but this will be outlined at a later stage in the planning process, according to submitted reports.
Harrow Estates is also planning major works in the area, with a plan for more than 500 new homes in an expansion of the Woodford Garden Village.
These plans were submitted to Stockport council for consideration in January.
Woodford Garden Village was granted planning permission in 2015, and since then more than 600 homes have been built on the site of the former Woodford Aerodrome.
