A huge 'data centre' worth millions could soon be built in Stockport, as plans emerge to transform a vacant industrial site in Reddish.
The 10-acre plot at Kenwood Point would be home to a £350m, 25,900sqm data centre. According to developer Kao Data, the new building off Kenwood Road would house some of the UK's 'most advanced computing technology'.
The three-storey centre would be used to house data storage equipment. Data processing spaces are also planned.
The centre would house sensitive 'mission-critical' data and will require strict security measures, including guards, CCTV and biometric access control system.
Back-up generators; an electricity substation; and a security lodge are also proposed in papers lodged with Stockport council. Kao Data, if successful, would open their first centre in the north.
The company has sites in Essex, Slough and Northolt.
A design and access statement reads: "The proposal represents an opportunity to bring a vacant site back into use and makes effective use of brownfield land in a sustainable manner. The proposed design implements high quality materials which will result in a significant improvement to that of the existing building and is considered to sensitively respond to the surrounding context of the site.
"The proposal comprises a sustainable, high-quality design which will benefit the locality in terms of the visual amenity, the provision of jobs, and significant investment in the local area."
