Stockport-based brewery Robinsons has received a prestigious award for one of its nearby pubs.

The Swan and Chequers, based in Sandbach, won 'best bar' at the Northern Design Awards. The awards, in the organisers' words, "bring together designers, retailers and property developers in a glittering celebration of Northern design and style."

Robinsons' Joint Managing Director, William Robinson, said: "It's a delight to have been awarded such an accolade, a real credit to all involved.

"Not only is it testament to the skill and creativity of our property and design team, but it demonstrates our ongoing commitment to investment across our pub estate."

The project's in-house senior designer and project manager spent weeks transforming the previously tired high-street pub in Hightown, Sandbach into a timeless mid-century town bar.

Originally an old corn exchange dating back to the late 1800s, the pub has changed dramatically over the years.

Its current design was influenced by a Churchill speech which was made from the pub's balcony in 1954.

The internal walls were removed to create a large open-plan bar area with plenty of natural light, and columns replete with Corinthian capitals. The interior was designed with a British mid-century era in mind, influenced by industrial Victorian London.
