A book swap has been set up at Hazel Grove Railway Station to encourage community spirit and give passengers something to do on journeys.

The scheme involves leaving a book on the bookcase next to the ticket office and taking one for yourself.

Peter, who has worked at the station for over 20 years, said "The Railway Station needs to diversify away from just a place to retail tickets to more of a community hub.

"This is why we decided at Hazel Grove to set up a community book library."

Some charity shops no longer accept books, so it is hoped that old books can be brought to the station for people to enjoy, rather than being thrown away. Hopefully it could help the environment as well.

In the month since the book swap was set up, those working at the station (who have all chipped in to help make the scheme a success) have reported that the passengers love it, and that they have received many kind comments.

According to the Office of Rail and Road, 405,000 passengers used Hazel Grove Railway Station between April 2022 and March 2023, the highest footfall since before the pandemic.

So, if you're one of those passengers and you find yourself without anything to do on your journey, have a look and see if anything grabs your interest.
