With a general election approaching, how will the Hazel Grove constituency be contested?
The Labour Party will select a candidate, but regards the seat as 'non-battleground'. Nonetheless, Labour has confirmed that it will continue to campaign locally.
The results of the last general election would suggest that the seat will be most strongly contested by the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats. However, figures from the electoral calculus put Labour in second place, just a fraction of a percent behind the Lib Dems.
The predicted votes figures are as follows:
- Lib Dem - 13,986
- Labour - 13,540
- Conservative - 11,323
- Reform - 4,369
- Green - 2,291
Local councillor Lisa Smart will contest the seat for the Lib Dems.
Given that current MP William Wragg is standing down at the next election, Paul Athans will contest the seat for the Conservatives.
Lisa Smart argued: "This constituency will be a two horse race between the Liberal Democrats and a desperately out of touch Conservative party.
"With our local health services at breaking point, local rivers being destroyed by sewage and far too many people struggling to provide the basics, people have told me it's time for change.
"Labour have now admitted they will not win here. The Liberal Democrats are the only choice for people in Hazel Grove constituency who want to send this government a message."
Meanwhile, Conservative candidate Paul Athans said: "All this shows is that only the Conservatives have a plan and will deliver for Hazel Grove.
"Having spent my working life in the Army, I am not a London centric career politician. I believe in service, to my country, and to the people of Hazel Grove.
"I know people living and working here want an MP to get on with the job and if elected I will deliver for them on the government's plans."
