EasyJet has launched a new Winter route from Manchester Airport to Kittila in Finnish Lapland, an entirely new destination in the airline's network.

Flights will take off from 16 November and operate twice per week throughout the winter season, with fares starting from £40.99.

EasyJet states that the new route is "for families looking to make Christmas that extra bit magical this winter". With Santa's village and winter scenery evocative of fairy tales, a trip to Kittila is sure to be memorable.

There is also something on offer for winter sports fans and hikers, who will find an excellent place to explore taiga forests and dramatic fells in Kittila. The region is home to a stretch of the Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park, one of Finland's natural treasures.

Stargazers can also catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights, and a host of other unusual natural phenomena owing to the region's polar climate. From 14-29 December, for example, visitors can witness the 'polar night' phenomenon, whereby the sun does not rise during the day.

Although visitors will have to pack some warm clothing, temperatures in Kittila are still less severe than in similar locations elsewhere in the world due to the influence of the gulf stream.

The Kittila Municipal Authority also boasts that "the world's cleanest air has been studied [in Kittila]", and that "important things to us are nature, humanity, hospitality and pioneering".

EasyJet said of the new route to Kittila: "Having last year added a new route connecting Manchester to Rovaniemi in the heartland of Lapland, the addition of Kittlia provides even more choice for those from the North West considering booking a magical Christmas break."

Ali Gayward, EasyJet's UK Country Manager said: "We're delighted to be adding a new route from Manchester to Kittila this winter.

"As an entirely new destination in our network, this new connection means we are able to build on our offering from Manchester for those in search of winter breaks by providing customers more choice to enjoy an even greater range of destinations this winter at fantastic low fares.

"Lapland is perfect especially for families with children looking to visit Father Christmas, winter ski lovers and all those wishing to explore this magical arctic destination."

Robert Smith, aviation director at Manchester Airport, said: "We know a family trip to Lapland is on many of our passengers' Christmas lists so it's fantastic to see easyJet launching a service from Manchester to Kittilä this winter.

"This new service demonstrates easyJet's commitment to providing outstanding choice year-round to passengers flying from Manchester."
