Former Stockport and Reddish MP Andrew Bennett dies aged 85

Andrew Bennett - former MP for Reddish and Stockport - has passed away aged 85.
Mr Bennett was the MP for the former Stockport North constituency from 1979-83, and was then the MP for Denton and Reddish from 1983-2005.
During that time, he was the shadow Education and Science minister, and also served as a chair of the House of Commons committee on statutory instruments.
Tributes for the former MP have come in from former friends and colleagues.
Andrew Gwynne - himself a former Denton and Reddish MP - said: "Andrew Bennett was a principled socialist, mentor, a great MP and a friend. [...]
"He gave 31 years of his life to public life in the house. RIP."
Cllr Mark Hunter, Leader of Stockport Council, said: "It is with great sadness that we learn of the passing of Andrew Bennett.
"Andrew was a tireless advocate for his constituents and worked passionately on issues that mattered to many, including social justice, public services, and the wellbeing of communities. His legacy in Stockport will be remembered not only for his political achievements but also for his commitment to making a real difference to the lives of those he served.
"As an MP, Andrew's integrity, humility, and strong sense of duty earned him the respect of many, both in Parliament and throughout our communities.
"On behalf of Stockport Council, I would like to extend my deepest condolences to Andrew's family, friends, and all who knew him. He will be greatly missed, and our thoughts are with his loved ones at this difficult time."
