Construction of 131 new homes on Edward Street reaches halfway milestone
Construction on a new block of apartments on Edward Street has reached the halfway milestone.
The new building sits close to the War Memorial Art Gallery, and will comprise 131 new affordable homes.
These will be a mixture of one and two-bed apartments, with 63 to be affordable rent, and 68 to be social rent.
This 11-storey building aims to "meet demand for high-quality affordable new homes in the area", Stockport Council says.
As well as the building itself, the area will also receive landscaping changes, to improve biodiversity.
Construction on the project began in March 2023. It is being partly funded by Homes England and the Greater Manchester Combined Authority Brownfield Housing Fund,
The building has now been 'topped out' - that is to say, the last beam has been placed atop the structure.
Present at the topping out ceremony was Cllr Colin MacAlister - Stockport's Cabinet Member for Economy, Regeneration & Housing - as well as representatives from The Guinness Partnership and Caddick Construction - managers and builders of the project respectively.
Dave Saville, Managing Director of Caddick Construction North West, commented: "The Guinness Partnership's ambition to improve the lives of local people, paired with Caddick's legacy for delivering high-quality schemes, has been key to both Edward Street and Kiwi Street in Salford, both of which are bringing much-needed homes to the region."
Kevin Williams, a director at The Guinness Partnership added: "The Topping out of Edward Street is a significant milestone in bringing more new homes to Stockport as part of our commitment to supporting development in Greater Manchester."
Cllr Colin MacAlister said: "The Guinness Partnership are a valued Stockport Housing Partnership Registered Provider and it was great to be part of the topping out event and see the good quality homes that are being delivered, with many more planned as we move forward with our ambitious plans to create a new town centre neighbourhood.
"This development will provide much needed affordable homes for rent in a prime town centre location."
