Dear readers - in an earlier version of this article, we incorrectly stated that the A6 would be affected by the works. This is not the case; our apologies for any confusion.

A stretch of road through Mersey Square - outside the Merseyway shopping centre - is set to close in January for pedestrianisation works.

The stretch of road between Port Street and Daw Bank will be closed to all vehicles - including buses - from Monday 8 January 2024.

It comes as part of pedestrianisation works for the new travel interchange. Once works are complete, Mersey Square will subsequently become a fully pedestrianised zone.

Thereafter, buses will exit via the new interchange.

Because of the works, bus stops D, E, F & G on Mersey Square and Rock Row will be closed.

The following bus services will be impacted by the closure: 11, 309, 310, 312, 314, 358, 360, 364, 370, 371, 375, 383 and 385.

Some buses will therefore relocate to temporary stands. Find a full list of the relocations HERE.

Cllr Grace Baynham, Cabinet Member for Highways, Parks and Leisure Services, said: "These works in Mersey Square are another element of the multi-million pound transformation of our town centre.

"Once complete, the new area will provide a great new space in front of Merseyway. Bus services that currently run in front of Merseyway will be rerouted as part of the Interchange development and TfGM will ensure that residents are signposted so they find the services they need.

"We would like to thank residents for their patience while these works are completed."
