A new restaurant is bringing the flavours of South India to the Pennine foothills.

Mango Mist is one of Stockport town centre's newest additions, having opened on 14 February on the site of the former Aquila Nera restaurant, Petersgate.

This eatery specialises in South Indian cuisine - the taste of the likes of Goa, Kerala and Madras, with all its quintessential flavour and freshness. It currently boasts a flawless five-star rating on Google reviews.

We spoke to chefs Anoop Chandra and Anu Ipe, themselves natives of South India, on what visitors can expect.

"This might not be a cuisine that you have explored before - it's something different", Anoop said.

"We want more people to know about South Indian cuisine. It's something you might not have had from your average takeaway, it's healthy, it's light, full of flavours…"

This certainly is a distinct cuisine. Whilst Anoop emphasises that visitors can expect some 'classics' like butter chicken on the menu, South Indian food is quite different from its more well-known Northern counterpart.

Explaining this difference, Anoop said: "It's the freshness of the ingredients and the use of spices. It's a bit more complex than North Indian - here you have an explosion of flavours.

"In South India, there is lots of use of coconut. Our basic cooking is based on coconut - all its produce, including oil and milk."

Using coconut as a basic ingredient means that many dishes are lighter, and vegan-friendly.

"We also have a lot of seafood", Anoop adds. "We have good curries and good seafood dishes, both pan-fried and deep-fried."

And, at Mango Mist, you can be sure that you're getting an authentic experience - many of the ingredients and spices are sourced by the team themselves in India, as close to the source as can be.

And from the subcontinent to Stockport, the ingredients are made into delicious dishes with a British twist flavour-wise and spice-wise.

What's more, with a close-knit team with decades of hospitality experience between them (in the likes of Dubai, India and London), you can be sure of a classy and welcoming experience at Mango Mist.

"It's about our hospitality as well", Anu explains. "We've been working in a hotel background for many years. We know about attention to detail, we have a great drinks selection… It's a complete dining experience."
