Sunday 29 March
The Stockport Music Story are collaborating with Avanti and South East Manchester Community Rail Partnership to launch a special art installation in Stockport Station Underpass depicting the town's musical history from the 1960's to the present day.
The artworks include global superstars such as The Beatles, David Bowie and Jimi Hendrix to unsung heroes such as Pete Maclaine, The Purple Gang and Wimple Winch, illustrated by a host of Stockport artists and illustrators including Vivian Lally Art, Tamsyn Kushner (Carnaby Beat) Emily Flanagan (Flazzle) and Martin Bain (MojoBravo).
The launch event on Sunday 29th March features a guided tour of the artworks and an exclusive Q&A in the platform waiting room with three key characters from Stockport's music history - Dee Christopholus from Wimple Winch, the band who supported Jimi Hendrix at The Sinking Ship, Pete Maclaine - the singer who famously turned down a songwriting offer from The Beatles and Joe Beard of The Purple Gang whose debut single 'Granny Takes A Trip' was a favourite of John Peel and banned by the BBC!
Tickets for the launch event are limited due to space and proceeds go to the station's chosen charity, Mentell. This event follows on from last year's unveiling of a Stockport Music Story plaque at Stockport Station commemorating the night David Bowie slept on the platform, following his solo acoustic performance at the Poco A Poco club in Heaton Chapel on Monday 27th April 1970.
