The RSPCA is trying to reunite a singing parrot with his owner after he was found straying in a street in Greater Manchester.

The cockatiel broke into song when the animal charity came to rescue him, and has since demonstrated a wide range of vocabulary - his rescuers nicknamed him after what seemed to be one of his favourite words: 'Peekaboo'.

Although found a few miles from Stockport, Peekaboo has since been rehomed to the borough with a temporary foster carer, while the RSPCA searches for his original owner.

The charity says it is eager to find Peekaboo's original owner; whilst he has been 'ringed', the information on it is not sufficient to find his home.

"Peek-a-boo's charming character suggests he has come from a loving home where a lot of time has been spent on him", an RSPCA spokesperson said. "[We] are eager to return him to his owner."

The charity suspects Peekaboo may somehow have escaped from his cage, and encourages anybody who can help identify his owner to come forward by contacting the RSPCA appeal line on 0300 123 8018.

RSPCA animal rescue officer Helen Chapman said: "Peek-a-boo is extremely tame and is a delightful character who has been well looked after and loved by someone, who must have spent a lot of time on him.

"He sings "if you're happy and you know it" and waits for you to clap, as well as a few other songs and phrases.

"Once he settled in with one of our regular foster carers, he was singing happily. His voice sounds like he is mimicking an older woman.

"It is such a shame that he is in this situation and if he has escaped accidentally then whoever owns him will surely be heartbroken that he is missing."

Once again, anyone with any information about him is asked to contact the RSPCA's appeal line number on 0300 123 8018.
