Just For Dads, based at St Chad's Church in Romiley, is a weekly 'stay and play' group aimed at providing support for fathers, uncles, granddads, and any other male carers of children aged five or under.

Children are given a space to play, whilst dads are given room for a breather, something to eat, and a chance to chat with other fathers.

As founder Vicky explains: "A lot of the dads that come along are actually looking for friendships, because they're often new to the area and might not know that many people.

"Or, maybe their friendship circle is not at the same stage of life, because they've not had children yet. It is a very different stage when you've got a baby or toddler.

"It's a real mixture. Some come to find an activity to do with their child, but a lot of them are there because they want to socialise with other dads."

Vicky set up the group after she realised that men felt they lacked a dedicated space to discuss fatherhood and other aspects of raising children.

"I thought, 'Wouldn't it be great to have a group just for dads?'", she says. "Mums get so many opportunities to speak with other women, but with dads there isn't as much time to make those connections.

"I wanted dads to feel just as comfortable as women do in that group environment."

The group offers an excellent place to discuss the shared experiences of fatherhood.

As Vicky says, "It means dads know they're not alone - it's a very lonely and difficult time going through becoming a parent."

Yet as well as being a place to make new friends and discuss shared issues, Vicky explains that the group is an excellent way for fathers to bond with their children, and to give partners a break.

"It really builds their relationship with the child and helps them gain confidence, especially if it's a dad with a young baby, because often in a family setting at home, mum will end up doing a lot of nappy changes, feeding, and so on."

"Mums get so many opportunities to speak with other women, but with dads there isn't as much time to make those connections."

The same goes for single dads, a number of whom attend the club.

There are toys and games at the club for children, as well as a whole host of activities for dads.

There are snooker and pool nights, an upcoming five-a-side game, and even a camping trip. Certainly, this is a support network as much as an hour of respite every week. Father figures can find not just advice around caring for their young ones, but also a band of other gents in the same situation who can provide support.

The group does not even have to be an in-person commitment - carers looking for advice and support can contact the club and be added to a WhatsApp group.

The group meets every Saturday, from 10.30am-12pm during term time, and every Wednesday from 12.45-2.15pm. If you're a dad and looking for a breather, some company, advice, support, and some food, find more information on the Just For Dads website HERE.
