Stockport residents have been asked to have their say on the future of house building in the town centre.

There are just a few days left to give feedback, with the deadline closing on 3 July.

As part of a new consultation, residents will be able to help influence aims and expectations for housing in the area, which developers and planners would have to abide by.

Specifically, Stockport Council has produced a 'Town Centre Residential Design Guide', which sets out some general aims and expectations.

It is this guide which the council is seeking feedback on.

The guide is extensive, covering all areas of the town centre, and addressing topics such as historical character, sustainability, housing design and density, and much more.

Some of the guide's proposals have taken inspiration from other European cities including London and Copenhagen.

The survey simply invites residents to comment on relevant sections and proposals in the guide. The guide has been split into the following core sections:

First is 'a changing town centre' - this section sets out plans for 'futureproofing' Stockport town centre, and responding to the national evolution of town centres more generally. Part of it reads: "A qualitative approach to achieving high-density development is required, considering the impact of a proposal on people, place and planet."

Next is 'key components to successful town centre living'. This section sets out general design guidance which developers must abide by. Part of it reads: "Design guidance in this section relates to the design of buildings and their interior, and external spaces around the building or in the public realm."

After that is the 'Stockport assets' section. This section sets out guidance on enhancing and protecting Stockport's historical built landscape.

And then the 'character area guidance' section, which, in the council's own words "acknowledges that the townscape character of the town centre varies [and] splits the town centre into 12 distinct character areas and provides specific guidance for each of these areas".

Cllr Mark Hunter, leader of Stockport Council, said: "The council has set out a radical new approach to tackling future housing needs and the changing roles of town centres.

"We are committed to making sure that new housing developments are of a quality and character to create sustainable and liveable places.

"The Town Centre Residential Design Guide will ensure that this commitment is delivered through the development management process."
