UP CLOSE: Plant Shop Manchester, Stockport’s hidden green gem
Nestled in Stockport's old town is a little green oasis, cosy and colourful against its assertive red brick surrounds.
Plant Shop Manchester is an independent store specialising in indoor house plants.
It sits snugly at 8 Mealhouse Brow - that is to say, the street which connects Market Place with Stockport's Underbanks.
Owner Emma moved here seven years ago from Cheadle.
"I always used to come to Stockport because there were a lot of vintage shops here", Emma said. "I felt like there was a community here already, so it was a no-brainer to move, really. [...]
"I liked the charm of the building. I feel it has a York, or Harrogate kind of feel."
The place certainly feels like a treasure trove - whether you're a budding botanist or a pro planter.
There is a huge range of stock, both in-store and online - from under £10 starter plants, through to extra large potted plants.
The shop is staffed by Emma herself and Phoebe, both of whom are - needless to say - passionate about plants, and know their Pothos from their Pachira.
It also means that, if you're unsure about starting your first plant nursery, this is a good place to go.
As Emma explains: "If you're new to plants, you can come in and explain what you're looking to do.
"Each plant has a different care structure. We try to give as much information to the buyer as possible in terms of what a plant needs; watering, lighting, whatever it is.
"Supporting an independent plant shop is obviously what we want people to do, but we will actually give you advice if you're looking for it."
What's more, as well as the extensive in-store and online shop, Plant Shop also offers a re-potting service.
It's an excellent choice if one of your favourite plants has perhaps got a bit unruly and exceeded the capacities of its current containment!
And whilst it's good to be able to call Plant Shop a Stockport-based business, the store caters not just for this borough, but for the whole Greater Manchester area.
