As the days get shorter and temperatures begin to drop, driving conditions can change quickly. Wet roads, icy mornings, fog, low sunlight and darker evenings can all make winter driving more challenging.

While we can't control the weather, our motors partner, Swansway OMODA JAECOO Stockport, has shared a few simple things every driver can do to make sure their vehicle is prepared for the months ahead.

Check your tyres

Your tyres are your only point of contact with the road, so making sure they're in good condition is particularly important during winter.

Before setting off, check that your tyres have sufficient tread and are inflated to the correct pressure. It's also worth taking a few moments to look for any visible damage or unusual wear.

Remember that stopping distances can increase significantly on wet or icy roads, so allowing extra space between you and the vehicle ahead is important.

Make sure you can see – and be seen

Shorter days mean you'll likely spend more time driving in darkness, while winter mornings can bring frost, mist and fog.

Keep your windscreen, windows, mirrors and lights clean, and make sure your wipers are working properly. It's also worth checking that your screenwash is suitable for colder temperatures.

If your windscreen is frosted, take the time to clear it properly before setting off. Don't rely on a small cleared area of glass – good visibility all around the vehicle is essential.

Keep an eye on your battery

Cold temperatures can put additional demands on your car's battery, particularly when you're using the heater, lights, heated screens and other electrical systems.

If your vehicle has been taking longer than usual to start, it could be worth having the battery checked before winter conditions become more challenging.

Pack a winter essentials kit

It can be useful to keep a few basic items in your vehicle during the colder months.

A winter kit might include:

  • An ice scraper and de-icer
  • A torch and spare batteries
  • Warm clothing or a blanket
  • A phone charger or power bank
  • Bottled water and snacks
  • A first-aid kit
  • A reflective jacket
  • Screenwash suitable for winter temperatures

You might never need them, but having the right items with you can make an unexpected delay much easier to manage.

Take extra care in difficult conditions

Even a well-prepared vehicle can't eliminate the risks associated with winter weather.

When conditions are poor, reduce your speed, increase your following distance and give yourself more time to react. Be particularly cautious on bridges, exposed roads and shaded areas, where ice can form even when other surfaces appear clear.

And if conditions become genuinely hazardous, consider whether your journey is necessary.

Get your vehicle ready for winter

If you'd like some extra reassurance before the colder months really set in, Swansway OMODA JAECOO Stockport is offering a Winter Vehicle Health Check until 31 December 2026.

The check is designed to give you an opportunity to make sure key areas of your vehicle are ready for winter driving. As part of the offer, you'll also receive a free winter kit, giving you some useful essentials to keep in your vehicle.

It's a simple step that could give you greater peace of mind before those frosty mornings, dark evenings and wet-weather journeys become part of the daily routine.

Stay safe, take your time and make sure you're prepared for winter.
